Discover America: How I want to do it..

I was walking out of the tube the other day and an advert caught my eye. It was there for only a few seconds before changing to something else but within those seconds it had hooked me in and I was thinking about it all day. As soon as I was home I searched on Google and was pleased to find the advert along with a fantastic website. You may know I have an interest in Western America and the life of the cowboy. This advert sucked me right in as I spotted the hat and the horse for just a few seconds, this is the kind of America that I want to discover. I want to take a map, close my eyes and stick a pin in it then make my way to that small unknown American town and explore. I like the idea of sitting in a coffee shop or a diner and watching people go about their daily life. One day I will do this, I will discover the life of the American cowboy or at least document a western adventure through my lens.

I would also like to document diners across America. Diners are the other part of America that hold a strange place in my heart. I would like to document them through a photography book but also write about the characters I meet along my trip. I won’t give too much away because maybe one day I will do this. I have visited America before but I have been longing to go back and explore some places which are unknown to me.

The Discover America website is very exciting. You can organise and research all your travel information from money to accommodation and transport. The website gives you access to explore the different states such as Texas and you can also read a few travel blogs if you fancy.  I think the best feature has to be the page you are greeted with which allows you to ‘explore’. Your eyes are met with beautiful photographs and you simply click on the ones that you like the look of and you are given lot’s of facts about the photograph, tips on where or what to eat and much more information.
The advert which sucked me in:

I know I said I have fallen in love with this advert, but as with all adverts there is one tiny thing I don’t like. I don’t think they needed to include “see it”,  keeping a little more simple would have been even better but it did the job of dragging me into the world of Discover America with only a few seconds of seeing the advert.

This sounds so cool, last year I worked in a place called Rapid City (next to Mount Rushmore) and it was so different! I’m from London and going to a place where almost no one goes was so exciting, everyone told me there was nothing there and it was boring but I really did love it. And they had all these western towns there! Hope you get your adventure soon xx

      Hi Rachael.

I just did a Google of Rapid City and it looks lovely, I would really like to visit there. Was that a work placement for whilst you were at university? x

I did it over the summer while at uni, I didn’t plan on going there but it was the only option left lol I wasn’t completely sold on the place but I thought if I don’t go I’ll never know, so I went and I made some really good friends 🙂 x

  2. I used to read the saddle club books when I was (much!) younger, and when they went off to the bar none ranch I used to dream of doing something like that, it sounded so amazing!
    I hope you do this!

It’s a pretty cool advert actually, really sucks you in doesn’t it? It would be awesome to immerse yourself in another culture and explore everything. I’d love to do that for Japan or Korea one day!

Sounds like it be good adventure. Yes something about diners, takes you back in history even though before our time, but any who I am sure you be there soon 😉

  5. Texas is a great state to visit, and you’ll find more of the cowboy culture away from the big cities. If I wanted to see cowboys, my first stop would be Wyoming. Can you ride western style? I’m sure you could find many opportunities for trail riding. Good luck!

Ah I understand why that sucked you in, its a great advert! A diner tour would be amazing. I’ve done 2 big road trips through america now – one from Atlanta and all the states from Georgia to Maine, and one through Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, and up to Ohio, Philly and Maine again. They were both incredible but theres still so so much I want to see and do there. What surprised me the most was some of the places wasn’t desperate to see but happened to be on route turned out to be some of the best bits of the trip. The USA is an amazing place! I’m living in Canada now so planning lots of trips to see this great country too! x

  8. I’m going on a USA trip this summer traveling from San Francisco to New York over 5 weeks ALL ALONE :O So nervous but excited, I leave in just over two weeks, eeeeep. LOVE your diners idea, do you ever watch Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives? Brilliant show!
Come check out my site to see what I’m going to be up to in the USA while I’m away… http://hautefuture.blogspot.co.uk/ I’m going to be blogging while I’m out there so hopefully you can get some other ideas planning your own trip. Also, anyone else who will be travelling the USA between the 21st of June and the 30th July, hit me up so we can see if any of our stops overlap 🙂

  9. I can totally understand about the American Diners! I’m always saying to people that I want to do a US roadtrip and eat at a different Diner every step of the journey. But they mainly give me weird looks, haha! x x
