Behind the Biz interview with Boundless – game-changing activated nuts and seeds

Today we’re taking a closer look at Boundless, a snacking brand with a clear mission; to make activated snacks that are healthy by nature and bold in flavour.

Boundless snacks come in four unique flavour combinations; Tamari & Aleppo; Turmeric & Smoked Paprika; Cayenne & Rosemary and Orange, Ginger & Maple.

Boundless was founded by Cathy Moseley in 2017. Now, in 2020, just 3 years later the brand can be found in over 3,000 stores across the UK including Sainsbury’s, Holland & Barrett and Ocado.

Now that I’ve introduced the brand let’s have a chat with Cathy and find out more about Boundless and her business journey.

Please tell us about Boundless.

We’re here to change the face of snacking- for better and for good.

Let’s call time on snacks that slow you down. Let’s rebel with snacks that work for you. Let’s raise the bar with game-changing flavour.

It’s time for a snacking revolution, and we’re starting one.

What makes Boundless different?

What makes Boundless different to any snack on the market is the fact that we’re activated: we’re all about tasting good and doing good for you.

Please tell us about the benefits of activated nuts and seeds.

Activation is actually pretty old, like centuries old. By soaking nuts & seeds in saltwater (kinda like the sea), we draw out phytic acid (which hinders your digestion and can taste a bit bitter). With the acid out of the picture, we’re left with a goldmine of nutrients and a snack that’s better for your digestion, has an incredible flavour and a lighter crunch. What’s not to love?!

What is the best way to enjoy Boundless snacks?

I mean, we’re a pour straight in your mouth kinda team. You can always use us as a salad or smoothie bowl topper, too, if you’re more into the civilised route.

How did you approach your first stockist?

Stalked & pestered until they eventually stocked us. Promise it works!

Congratulations on the success of your recent funding round. How will this support the next stage of the Boundless journey?

Thanks very much! We’ll be working hard on spreading the Boundless message beyond the UK – we’re currently stocked in around 10 countries, but we’re ready to take activated snacking worldwide!

What did you do before launching Boundless?

I used to work in the city as a trader, and after twenty loooong years I thought enough was enough! I’ve always been a huge foodie and so I upped & left to turn my passion into my business.

Did you always intend to set up your own business?

Not necessarily – I knew I wasn’t going to be in the city forever, but originally I started Boundless as snacks to enjoy myself & share amongst friends & family. It was only when others started asking me to make some for them I realised I was on to something.

Please share a business high and low with us.

Low – getting delisted from the first store we were in, due to our price point.

High – getting a zero VaT rating, dropping our price to £1, and getting back into the store.

What has been your biggest lesson from COVID19 and lockdown?

You never know what’s gonna happen, so always have a plan B AND C.

What advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurs in the food sector?

F*ck it, we’ll find a way.

What are your plans for the final few months of 2020?

Eat, sleep & breathe Boundless – what’s new?!

You can buy Boundless snacks in Sainsbury’s, Holland & Barrett, John lewis & Partners, Borough Box and on their website. Support the biz over on Facebook and Instagram.

I want to say a massive thank you to Cathy for taking the time to share her business journey with us. I hope, like me, you enjoyed discovering more about Boundless snacks.

My Behind the Biz interviews are here to share the stories of founders but also to inspire you, the reader. So, if you’re thinking of starting a business, podcast or blog then just go for it. Like Cathy says, F*ck it, you’ll find a way.
