Trying New Things In May

My foray back into blogging began with my April recap. I didn’t come back with a plan as such, just a simple need to write again. I also want to return to the parts of myself that have been quiet for a while. Lately, that’s looked like saying yes to new things, leaning into curiosity and being intentional about how I spend my time.

I began trying to embrace new things back in September. I took up Reformer Pilates several times a week which has been truly life changing, but I’ll talk more about that another day. I’d to like think there were more things that I did last year but in reality I was just a little burnt out. I did a lot of fun things with my children, but that’s not really what this post is about.

More recently I’ve been adding new things into my daily routine, small shifts that belong to me. One of these small changes that is currently having a big impact on my life is aiming to hit 15,000 steps a day. It seems to be the sweet spot for me when it comes to losing weight, helping with my mood and allowing me the time to listen podcast, audiobook or to quite simply, just sit with my thoughts. This daily addition of increased steps has seen me exploring more of Cambridge as I search for beautiful places to walk.

It all sounds purposeful written down but it can also be a little uncomfortable to push yourself out of your comfort zone, or at least for me. I used to be able to sit with that discomfort and it’s a place I’m trying to get back to. Trying anything new comes with a hefty dose of nerves, of course it does, that’s normal. If I avoid those feelings entirely, I’ll never allow myself the chance to try anything new at all.

Getting back into blogging has also been intentional and considering it has been several years, you could even say that writing again feels new to me. Since sharing my first post in several years, I have felt a shift, a very positive one and I’m keen to see where it takes me.

Last Sunday I followed a small spark of curiosity and found myself hitting drums for 2 hours. I stumbled upon Taiko drumming many years ago, at what used to be the Kaetsu Centre in Cambridge and then again in London. So while I was browsing for fun activities for the children, something I spend a lot of time doing, a local ‘have a go’ session popped up and I knew this was my chance. I felt super nervous before I arrived but the teachers were amazing, everyone in the group was friendly and welcoming and I had so much fun. I can’t wait for the next session.

There’s something addictive about stepping slightly outside your usual world and realising it’s not as daunting as you thought.

So there we have it, few small steps in slightly different directions to kick-start the month of May.
